Euro-FBP WG2 Meeting

"Towards a consensus on subtyping schemes for surveillance and outbreak investigations of Cryptosporidium”
This two-day meeting aims at reaching a consensus on current typing and sub-typing of Cryptosporidium, a FBP of considerable importance in Europe. To date, and despite extensive research, a global consensus on how to apply multi-locus subtyping in a standardised fashion is missing and has largely rendered inter-laboratory comparisons of results difficult. The Workshop will address the topic from several points of view, including human and animal health perspective, foodborne and waterborne transmission, and evolutionary biology. These aspects will be mostly covered by experts from the COST action (Rachel M. Chalmers, Simone M. Cacciò, Letitia Kortbeek, Karin Troell). An invited expert in Cryptosporidium biology and genetics, Dr. Giovanni Widmer (Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Infectious Disease and Global Health, USA), will address the topic from an evolutionary standpoint. This will not be a training session, and attending participants should have background knowledge and experience on genotyping / sub-genotyping this parasite. Planned activities: Day 1: Use of typing data for public health, the confusing world of Cryptosporidium genotyping, diversity and transmission to humans, human epidemiology and foodborne outbreaks, veterinary aspects and short reports by country. Day 2: Guided group discussions and feedback sessions in the morning and joint discussions in the afternoon. Outcome: A proposed method will be worked into a proposal for a proof-of-concept study to investigate whether researchers can compare MLVA results between different laboratories through use of a set of reference DNA in each laboratory. Based on discussions from this workshop a white-paper was later published i Eurosurveilance. |

"Analytical Methods on Foodborne Parasites: analysis of food matrices and diagnostics in human medical and veterinary samples”
This will be a co-located meeting, with a shared meeting with COST Action TD1302 Cystinet on Day 3.
Planned activities:
Day 1: Management Committee Meeting, Presentation of Bilthoven Workshop Outcomes, Presentation of Berlin Workshop Outcomes, Plenary Discussion, Individual WG meetings
Day 2: Best Practices in Europe regarding detection of FBP – invited and submitted presentations, presentations from STSM-attendees in Y1.
Day 3: Co-located meeting with Cystinet.
The second and third day will cover central WG2 topics on “Analytical Methods on Foodborne Parasites: analysis of food matrices and diagnostics in human medical and veterinary samples”.
The aim is to facilitate communication and connectivity between labs and to exchange competences and methods detecting FBS in different samples and matrices.
It will offer the opportunity for the WG2 participants to present their work and competence, and to highlight current strength or gaps. Further information on how to present at this meeting will follow soon.
The third day will be co-organized with Cystinet and cover similar topics with a focus on Taenia and other cestodes.

"Review of the effectiveness of potential measures to control foodborne parasites"
This will be a working workshop for WG3 participants and will specifically focus on coordinating an article concerned with the database regarding inactivation and removal of FBP from different food matrices. In addition, efforts to determine the focus and utility of a training school, probably in Y3, will be determined.

Main topics of the meeting will be
Main topics of the meeting will be
- Discuss the arrangement of possible training schools (TS) in Y3 (and Y4)
- Discuss further activities (tasks) on ‘guidelines’ and ‘lab mapping and methods’.
- We expect to discuss the specific topics as a whole group.
